Green Island
Green Island is a beautiful UNESCO protected Island surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the great news is, it’s only a 45 minute catamaran ride from Cairns Wharf. With its mix of sandy beaches, turquoise waters and vibrant marine life, this tropical escape provides a variety of outdoor experiences in a compact, easily accessible location.

Whether you are going to Green Island for a day trip or if you plan to stay at the eco-friendly Green Island Resort, you will have plenty to keep you busy while visiting the island. The island is a paradise for snorkelling and swimming with shallow waters that make it ideal for beginners snorkellers. Colourful fish, coral formations, even sea turtles can often be seen close to shore, allowing visitors to enjoy the reef without needing to venture far from the beach. Guided snorkel tours and glass-bottom boat rides provide additional ways to explore the marine environment. Glass-bottom boats make it easy to stay dry and see the underwater world from above, while still learning all about the reef below from your knowledgeable skipper.

Walking trails across the island allow visitors to explore its tropical rainforest interior, offering a contrast to the beaches and reef that surround it. Informative signage along the paths highlight local flora and fauna, giving kids insight into the island’s natural environment and conservation efforts. Over 89 different species of birds have been sighted on the Green Island over the past 50 or so years and while some currently nest there and call the island home, others use it as a stop over on their way to their own nesting grounds.

Green Island also offers educational experiences, with presentations on reef ecology, turtle conservation, and the history of the island. These programs are tailored to all ages and provide context for the unique ecosystem that surrounds the island.
With its combination of snorkelling, wildlife encounters, rainforest walks and educational programs, Green Island provides a compact but rich tropical experience. Accessible by ferry from Cairns, the island is an ideal destination for a day trip or even a few days, offering both adventure and relaxation in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
